Assistance for people affected by the fires |
The unprecedented series of fires that devastated Greece in recent weeks has
destroyed hundreds of thousands of forest hectares, millions
of olive trees, hecatombs of farm animals. Has burned a large
number of villages and to-date, has cost the life of 73 of
our fellow human beings.
Thousands of people have overnight lost their homes, animals and
farms and have been left only with the marks of the terror that has hit them
and their communities.
Now, that the fires have receded and life is attempting to return
to whatever normality is left. Now, that the people of Greece are faced with
the enormous task of re-planting the lost forest and farms, re-stocking dairy
farms and sheep & goad herds, re-building the burned villages and re-constructing their ruined
lives. Now! Now is the time for us, that from near and afar; stood helpless
bystanders to the destruction of countryside that took millenniums to evolve
and people that witnessed hard work of many generations; swallowed by the
flames. Now is the time for us to help. Help to ease, or better still to eliminate
the effects of this disaster. Help to re-build, help to prevent another tragedy
from ever happening again, help Greece to return to normality. Help the people
of Peloponnesus and Evia and of all other areas affected. Help them to make
Greece as beautiful and proud as she ever was!
